Grains of Change Journey

Our collaboration was born from a noble intent: to celebrate and illuminate the cultural roots interwoven with one of our nation's most significant historical epochs. Rice cultivation in South Carolina shaped our society significantly, its influence resonating till the throes of the Civil War. In the aftermath of the war, a notable transformation took place – enslaved individuals were freed, no longer tilling the fields.
Our shared journey began with our esteemed teammate, head brewer, and extraordinary human, Julian Miller. His captivating narratives about his upbringing, rooted deeply in family, countryside, and culinary traditions, held us in rapt attention in the brewhouse.

These narratives morphed into tangible reality when Julian revisited the Low Country with his family last year. The journey rejuvenated his spirit, rekindling cherished memories from his youth. This experience sparked the proposition of a collaboration with JC and the team at Trillium, a notion conceived from their past successful partnerships and enlightening discussions about the historical and contemporary implications of agriculture in our nation. JC wholeheartedly agreed with the idea to intertwine the rich history of Carolina Gold Rice into the collaboration beer for the Barrel & Flow festival.
This partnership evolved into an inspiring journey, glimpses of which we're thrilled to share with y’all. Some of our team members had the opportunity to meet Rollen, whose enslaved ancestors once cultivated the same Carolina Gold rice. We invite you to embark on this journey with us, stepping into the past and the present through the following vivid images of our collaboration.
